Metal/hardcore band Aveira Skies have been very quiet recently, but after chatting to vocalist Haydn Wood, I think that we can expect great things from them in 2016. We caught up about how the band came about, studio time, and the music scene down under!
CB – Hello! Thank you for taking the time to speak to me today! For those who haven’t listened to Aveira Skies, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
Haydn - We are a "metalcore" band from Perth, Western Australia, taking a lot of influence from bands like The Ghost Inside & Architects.
CB – What have you guys got planned for 2016? Tours? New releases?
Haydn - Tough question for us at the moment, I suppose the best response is we have been quiet over the last few months for a reason! So safe to say we have some plans in the works at the moment!
CB – I see you are from Perth, WA! How do you find the music scene in Perth in general?
Haydn - It has changed since we all started going to shows years ago, but I feel that the 18+ scene is very strong and always seems to be however the all ages scene seems to go up and down but we have got a lot older now to when we use to go to all ages shows so I don’t know if we have a different view of it now and it actually is no different. Perth has one of the best scenes in Australia we believe when we are on tour other bands know all about the main venues and they've got stories that have made it to other states from Perth shows which is always a good sign!
CB – How did you guys all get together as a band? And who were your biggest musical inspirations when you started out? Have these changed at all over the years?
Haydn - We came together in a bit of a mess to be honest. Our guitarist Jason and Daniel played in an alternative rock band about 7 years ago and ended up moving into a heavier influence they had an ad up at a local university and they found Ash our old guitarist, not long after this I (Haydn) found the band on Gumtree of all places!! After some issues with bass players we ended up getting a good friend Sam in on Bass then shortly after Ash had to leave to move away, so we moved Sam to guitar and got a local promoter who ran a pile of shows for us in on Bass.
When we started I think our influences were more "metal" Jason and Sam still seem to have a weird obsession with old Parkway Drive and seem to find them playing songs over and over again at band practice! I think our influences are still the same but the way that we write our music has evolved which has led us to find a new sound recently.
CB – What process do you guys normally follow with regards to the time you spend in the recording studio?
Haydn - The time in the studio has been different every time for us. Our first EP, (Longer Than Flesh, Longer Than Ashes) was 100% ready to go when we hit the studio which in hindsight wasn’t a terrible thing but the first time you hear it back properly is it! Our guitarist Jason writes every thing and records Pre-production tracks for us and only recently have we tracked pre-production vocals which has made a world of difference. When we went to the UK to record our last album (The Rise of a New Breed) we were pretty well prepared however we were on a tight schedule because we left straight from our last day recording for the UK tour, we were happy with the album however I think we would have like more time to tidy little things up, maybe we should have tracked faster!!!
CB – Finally, do you have anything you want to say to Aveira Skies fans?
Haydn - I know we've been quiet lately so hope there are some out there still ahah but hopefully the wait will be worth it for everyone!
